Individuals of all ages are invited for a hands-on opportunity to learn about bicycle maintenance, riding safety tips and how to find an affordable bike to meet one’s needs. Youth can learn how to Earn-a-Bike through a unique program focusing on bicycling maintenance at Freewheelin’ Community Bikes. Those of all skill and ability levels are encouraged to attend. It’s the first Thursday of the month, which means the Children’s Museum is free from 4 – 8 pm for everyone. Be ready for a big crowd along with the big fun. The museum is located at 30th and Meridian (entrance on Illinois north of 30th). Parking is also free. Info at 317.334.3322.

FREE ARTS WALK: FIRST FRIDAY ART EXHIBITS – Friday, Aug. 7 (DOWNTOWN, SOUTH)

Twenty-five art galleries (many on Mass. Avenue and in Fountain Square) are open from 6 – 9 pm (times may vary) for viewing. In addition, you can check out the Stutz Art Space, 212 W. 10th Street, the Athenaeum Artspace, 401 E. Michigan Street, the Midland Art and Antiques Market, 907 E. Michigan Street, the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art, 1043 Virginia Avenue and Indy Indie Artist Colony, 26 E. 14th Street. Many of the galleries also serve cheese, crackers or fruit slices and soft drinks. Ummm, culture with snacks! Presented by IDADA, the Indianapolis Downtown Artists and Dealers Association.

This program will feature a performance of “interpretive rock jazz blues” by 3:1 (Three to One) with special guest, keyboardist Kevin Anker. Musicians Tom Kiefaber, Tim Fuller and Joe O’Connell create a unique blend of numerous genres that has generated a loyal following. Acoustic or electric, from Al Green to Warren Zevon, the band is steeped heavily in the music of classic rock groups as well as music by Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix and others. DISCOUNTS AND DEALS

– Celebrating a Birthday? Denny’s offers a free original Grand Slam meal (dine-in only) on your birthday. Bring your driver’s license or State ID. card. Nothing like a free meal to make your birthday feel even more special!

Easley Winery, 205 N. College Avenue, offers free winery tours on Saturdays and Sundays starting at noon. You can also taste 7 wines for $2 plus tax. Info at 317.636.4516.

– The Children’s Museum allows persons with disabilities to enter for just $1 with documentation (I’m told a Medicaid card is sufficient). People with Medicaid or TANF can be admitted, but with an access pass and a photo ID. For people with disabilities on Medicaid Waivers, the information necessary to get an access pass may be found at www.in.gov/fssa/dfr/2999.htm. Currently their caregivers must still pay full price ($19.50) to accompany them. Also, the first Thursday of each month is free from 4 – 8 pm for everyone. The next free afternoon/evening is Thursday, Aug. 6.

– Conner Prairie, The NCAA Hall of Champions, The Historical Society, and The Indiana State Museum also accept the access pass mentioned in the Children’s Museum listing. When the Indianapolis Museum of Art begins charging admission in April, they will accept the access pass as well. Call the various facilities before you go to check on the details.

– Otte Golf and Family Fun Center offers free VIP passes to mentally and physically disabled individuals that allow them to play miniature golf, use the battling cages and hit golf balls on the driving range, all for free. The facility is open year round. Call ahead to find out the seasonal hours. The owners stress that they will do everything possible to help disabled individuals have a great time. They ask you to let them know in advance if you are bringing a large group. Otte Golf and Family Fun Center is located at 681 S. Sheek Road in Greenwood. Info at 317.881.4620.
